Beyond the Notes: Why Fragrance Is One of Our Most Personal Forms of Expression

There are certain things we choose to wear that communicate something about us before we ever introduce ourselves. Fashion is often the first thing people notice, but fragrance has a way of telling a much more personal story. It can reflect a mood, evoke a memory, shift your confidence, or become so closely associated with someone that you recognize them before they even enter the room. Unlike an outfit, fragrance is not always visible, but its presence can be just as defining.

That sentiment came to mind during KAYALI's celebration of its newest fragrance, Yum Vanilla Cupcake 108, at Lavan Chelsea in New York City. The evening was designed around the playful, indulgent world of the fragrance, with every detail seemingly considered. From cupcake decorating and personalized postcards to a milkshake station and the opportunity to customize a fragrance bottle, guests were invited to experience the scent beyond the traditional fragrance counter.

At the center of the evening was KAYALI founder Mona Kattan, whose presence brought an added personal touch to the celebration. I had the opportunity to meet her briefly as she introduced the fragrance by spraying it onto my skin. Her energy was immediately warm and welcoming, something that seemed to carry throughout the room. There was a noticeable level of attentiveness among the team, from the hospitality to the execution of each activation. Everyone seemed genuinely invested in making the evening special. It felt less like attending a product launch and more like stepping into an environment where the people, atmosphere, and experience were all working together.

And then, of course, there was the fragrance itself.

Yum Vanilla Cupcake 108 is exactly as its name suggests: sweet, creamy, and unmistakably reminiscent of a freshly decorated cupcake. On first spray, I found it particularly delectable, with a softness that made the sweetness feel inviting rather than overwhelming. Its composition moves through notes of lemon sugar and rainbow sprinkles into a creamy heart of white caramel, coconut flakes, sweet milk, and buttercream, before settling into vanilla frosting and white amber. It is an unapologetically gourmand fragrance, one that embraces the pleasure of smelling delicious.

But what makes fragrance interesting to me has never been limited to its individual notes. It is the emotional response that follows. Two people can wear the exact same perfume and have entirely different relationships with it. One might associate it with a special occasion, while another might reach for it on an ordinary morning simply because of how it makes them feel. That personal connection is what makes fragrance so difficult to define through a traditional description.

I have always believed that scent is an extension of identity. It can be an expression of who we are, but also who we want to be on a particular day. Sometimes it is about feeling polished and put together; other times, it is about comfort, nostalgia, or simply wanting to leave a lasting impression. Fragrance has the ability to shift your presence without requiring you to change anything else about yourself.

In that sense, the experience KAYALI created felt fitting for a fragrance rooted in the familiarity and joy of something as universally recognizable as a birthday cupcake. The evening translated the scent into something guests could see, taste, personalize, and ultimately associate with a memory of their own.

Perhaps that is what makes fragrance such a compelling part of personal style. We can change our clothes, our makeup, and even the way we present ourselves, but the scents we gravitate toward often hold a much more intimate meaning. They become part of the memories we leave behind and the impressions people carry with them.

After all, being remembered is one thing. Being remembered by your scent is another.
