The emotional bonds we feel of love, intrigue, allure, nostalgia, isolation, excitement - interiors and clothing can evoke these kinds of visceral reactions.

How one understands space within a room or dressing on the body is rooted in the breakdown of the form. It’s the connection that is created between the walls, flooring and furnishings that combines to produce an experience. With fashion style, how a dress, shoes, jewelry and bag interact is a dialog that takes place on the human shape.

Interiors that enable an embrace-like feeling is an experience that is achieved through the application of layers. For instance, the concept of enveloping the visitor with color; is achieved by drenching the walls and ceiling in the same oxblood red paint color. There’s a continuous shade experience that crafts a cove-like effect. A closeness. Something calm and grounded.

Brutalism and warmth offers both sides of livability when it comes to interiors. In practice, for a Malibu project I used striated vertical lines in cement within a shower room, yet paired it with natural wood to balance the starkness. This layering of materials plays beautifully together in the space.

Recently, at Dior Cruise 2027 collection by Jonathan W. Anderson, there’s a sense of magic that he captured in his designs - Unexpected, romanticized detailing with layers of floating chiffon, fringe detailing gave movement to the clothes. A dynamism was seen with the sequin and beaded dresses giving a flapper-esque vibe, especially the drop waist silk gowns in pale yellow and pink.

All juxtaposed with structured tailoring, ripped jeans, black and white pin stripe fur. His suit jackets were structured with the 1950’s reference shown with exaggerated volume at the hips, sophisticated gingham print felt fresh in chiffon. His menswear offered metallic suits, dress shirts in pastel mauve, yellow, green with white piping - a Western feel to them. Biophilic references popped up with Ladybug and shell shaped bags.

Fundamental to design is the connection it creates. Society is craving real bonds, a return to

what’s natural and human. Something separate from AI generated roboticism and canned culture. The ability to feel something genuine. Architectural forms become polished through connection whether the interplay of furnishings and finishes within a room or clothing and accessories on the body.
