As I Lay Dying, named after 1930 William Faulkner novel, is based on the Southern Gothic literary style born in the war-torn south, and popularized by authors like Flannery O’Connor and William Faulkner. In a striking union of fashion, philosophy, and theology, Berlin-based designer Yasemin Akgül presents "Kirâmen Kâtibîn – Rakîb & Atîd: Equality and Rebellion in the Creation of Givenchy", a couture editorial forged at the intersection of conceptual design and cultural memory. Created for the "Past Intelligence" exhibition at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, this two-look couture series engages in a radical reinterpretation of a 1986 Givenchy pattern once reimagined by Uli Richter. Yasemin Akgül breathes new life into this archival artifact, framing it within a deeply layered conceptual narrative drawn from Islamic tradition, the twin angelic recorders Rakîb and Atîd. These figures, ever-watchful, become metaphors for balance, surveillance, and moral rebellion. Visually grounded in the philosophy of Yin and Yang, the two designs evoke opposing yet interconnected forces: light and shadow, elegance and defiance, the past and the present. The editorial unfolds through a high-contrast interplay of black and white organza ruffles, precision tailoring, and timeless silhouettes, all captured through both digital and film mediums. Echoes of Audrey Hepburn's grace, particularly in the elongation and drama of the gloves, link Akgül's vision to the legacy of Givenchy while pushing it into new intellectual terrain. The Atîd look channels darkness and depth: a flowing black dress layered with ombré organza, suggestive openings, and dramatic ruffles that ripple like whispered secrets. In contrast, Rakîb radiates in white, the purity of its form interrupted by angular tailoring and sharp monochrome accents, culminating in sculptural wings and a pronounced bow that anchors its call for justice. Each frame in the editorial becomes an act of conceptual rebellion, simultaneously honoring haute couture history and challenging the viewer to consider the narratives that garments can convey. The result is more than fashion photography; it is a visual manifesto, crafted with precision, symbolism, and soul.
